The women of AMAR serve God/Las mujeres de AMAR sirven a Dios

When the Office of Intercultural Ministries at the Archdiocese of Milwaukee decided to host 500 attendees of the Congreso Eucaristico Arquidiocesano at the Cousins Center – there was work to be done.

The Archdiocesan Eucharistic Congress, an all-day event, offering Eucharistic ministers, cantors, lectors, hospitality ministers, parish choirs, catechists, acolytes, priests, deacons, men and women religious, young adults, parish groups and parish leaders from Hispanic parishes around the diocese the opportunity to get together and to learn more about their ministries, requires a lot of space.

Additionally, the Cousins Center’s Matre Christi Chapel, which had not been used for some time, needed to be cleaned from top to bottom. Fortunately, this is where a group of dedicated Catholics from St. Adalbert Parish, Milwaukee, stepped in.

Agrupación de Mujeres al Servicio del Reino de Dios (a group of women serving the kingdom of God), otherwise known as AMAR, volunteered to spend a morning cleaning the chapel. And so they came bringing buckets, mops, cleaning supplies and plenty of elbow grease. For 2 ½ hours one morning, 10 women, and a gentleman who graciously offered his time, scrubbed the chapel until it sparkled and smelled like a spring garden.

After the cleaning was done and the group had finally sat down to enjoy a much needed and deserved break, a surprise visitor popped in. Archbishop Listecki personally stopped by to thank the women for their service. As appreciative as the women were to meet the archbishop in person and take a few photos with him, that is not the reason they do what they do.

Carmela Rodriguez, coordinator of AMAR, said, “We offer our services to God because of what we have already received from him.” As coordinator, Carmela serves as chief organizer of this group of 43 women from St. Adalbert’s. Together, the women of AMAR, have done good deeds, such as this one, in the name of God. However, this group was already performing acts of charity long before it came to St. Adalbert’s.

AMAR actually began 20 years ago at St. Anthony Parish, Milwaukee. It was only seven years ago that it moved to St. Adalbert’s. No matter which parish AMAR calls home, its mission remains the same – to offer services up to God. “We enjoy working together as a team for God,” said Maria A. Rodriguez of her work with AMAR. Whether it is cleaning a chapel for a conference or another task needing to be done, the women of AMAR are ready to serve.  


Members of AMAR who participated in the chapel cleaning are as follows: Maria Valdivia, Maria T. Alvarez, Betty Romero, Carolino Valdivia, Carmela Rodriguez, Sandra Rodriguez, Maria A. Rodriguez, Carmen Fierro, Maria Jaramilla and Arlina Avila. Claudio Amador offered his services too.

Cuando las oficinas del Ministerio Intercultural de la Arquidiócesis de Milwaukee decidieron recibir 500 personas para el Congreso Eucarístico Arquidiocesano en el Cousins Center – se encontraron con que había mucho trabajo por hacer.

El Congreso Eucaristico Arquidiocesano, un evento de todo un día que ofrece la oportunidad de congregarse y aprender más acerca de sus ministerios, requiere de mucho espacio para recibir a sus invitados ministros de Eucaristía, cantores, lectores, ministros de hospitalidad, coros parroquiales, catequistas, acólitos, sacerdotes, diáconos, hermanas/os con vida religiosa, jóvenes adultos, grupos parroquianos y líderes parroquiales Hispanas alrededor de la diócesis.

Adicionalmente, la capilla Matre Christi del Cousins Center, que no ha sido usada por mucho tiempo, necesitaba ser limpiada de esquina a esquina. Afortunadamente, ese fué el momento en que un grupo de dedicadas Católicas de la Parroquia de San Adalberto, Milwaukee, entró en escena.
La Agrupación de Mujeres al Servicio del Reino de Dios, también conocida como AMAR, se hizo voluntaria a pasar una mañana limpiando la capilla. Fué así como ellas llegaron trayendo baldes, trapeadores, suministros de limpieza y muchas ganas de ayudar. Por 2 ½ horas, una mañana, 10 damas y un caballero, que noblemente también ofreció su tiempo, limpiaron la capilla hasta que esta quedó reluciente y oliendo como un jardín de primavera.
Después de que la limpieza acabara y el grupo finalmente se sentara a disfrutar de un bien necesitado y merecido descanso, una sorpresa apareció ante ellos. El Arzobispo Listecki, en persona, se les acercó a agradecerles por sus servicios. Fué un acto que las mujeres de AMAR apreciaron muchísimo, el conocer personalmente al arzobispo y tomarse algunas fotos con él, pero claro está, ello no era la razón por la que habían venido aquella mañana a la capilla Matre Christi.

Carmela Rodriguez, coordinadora de AMAR, dijo, “Nosotras ofrecemos nuestros servicios a Dios por lo que ya hemos recibido de él.”  Como coordinadora, Carmela hace las veces de jefe organizadora en su grupo de 43 mujeres de San Adalberto. Juntas, las mujeres de AMAR han logrado buenas cosas como ésta de la capilla Matre Christi, en el nombre de DIOS, A todo esto, a propósito, el mismo grupo ya había realizado actos de caridad, mucho antes de llegar a congregarse en San Adalberto.

AMAR realmente empezó hace 20 años en la parroquia de San Antonio, Milwaukee. Son entonces siete años que han pasado desde que se mudaron a San Adalberto. Pero no importa en qué parroquia AMAR resida, su misión es siempre la misma – ofrecer sus servicios a DIOS. Sea que limpien una capilla para una conferencia o alguna otra tarea que se necesite realizar, las mujeres de AMAR están siempre listas para servir.
