"Random Reflections"
July 14, 2009
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
A few random reflections…
The All Star Game offers us an opportunity to reflect on the Great American pastime as well as a chance to consider how swiftly summer passes. The game usually marks the midpoint of summer fun. I hope that you are taking some time to rest and relax during these beautiful summer days.
We often are so driven by work and the daily activities of life that we don’t get time for rest. The economy and the stress of our finances have all of us a lot more conscious of the need for work. I am hoping that everyone can get a little break from the usual activities just to recharge. Remember that Jesus took time to remind the Apostles to “Come aside and rest for a while.”
Take some time to smell the flowers.
Another thought about baseball and our iconic Miller Park. It’s hard to believe that it’s been ten years since the collapse of Big Blue and the tragic loss of the three iron workers in that disaster. It’s almost impossible to go to the ball park and not tell the story of the crash that happened July 14, 1999. Our prayers still go out to the families of those whose lives were lost on that sad day.
Great saints are celebrated this week. July 14th, Blessed Kateri Takawitha, the first Native American “blessed” in our country, our prayers are joined with the parishioners at the Congregation of the Great Spirit; July 15th, St. Bonaventure, Doctor of the Church and credited as the “Second Founder” of the Franciscan Order. All three branches of First Order Franciscans are represented in the archdiocese. Buona Festa, fratelli!; July 16th, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel brings feast day wishes to the Carmelites in the archdiocese and to parishioners of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish; July 18th is the feast of St. Camillus de Lellis and the feast day of the Camillians who serve the poor, sick and elderly so well in our archdiocese at St. Camillus Campus.
Thank you one and all for your continued good works and support.
Please remember to pray to the Holy Spirit for God’s grace in giving us a new Archbishop.
Faithfully in Christ,
Most Reverend William Patrick Callahan
Archdiocesan Administrator
Archdiocese of Milwaukee
