"Chrism Trail"

Year for the Priest

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It’s the second week after Easter and I, along with the other auxiliaries of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, have hit the “Chrism Trail.” It’s a reference among many bishops to the beginning of the confirmation season. I must admit that I do like confirmations. There is something about the fire that is ignited by the Holy Spirit in our young people. It seems to be a second awakening for them about the importance of their faith as well as an understanding that they must now be responsible as witnesses for Christ and his Church.

In looking at the congregation during a confirmation Mass it’s obvious that they are vicariously examining their own lives in relationship to the spirit that they received at their confirmation. Many nod in agreement when the homily is preached and the emphasis is on the importance of continuing the practice of the faith. Many are realists and understand that the anointing with chrism will not wipe away all the difficulties that they will face in the years ahead. They know however, that it is a symbol that they will face those struggles accompanied by the Christ they have come to know and receive in the sacrament.

As the number of confirmations I preside at increases, so will my prayers that the Holy Spirit will ignite in all of us a desire to live our faith more fully and completely. Imagine if we all caught the fire of Christ’s love what a blaze we would bring to the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. Just remember love one another.

See you at Mass!

Most Reverend Jerome E. Listecki
