"Summer Memories"

July 13, 2010

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I’m as patriotic as the next guy, and in some sense, even more so. I love the Fourth of July; the parades, the picnics and the fireworks are all part of Americana.

I’ve been in Europe during some of their national celebrations and often times it’s more a show of strength or a demonstration of their military might, which is put on display. But it’s different here in the United States. It’s not our might that defines us, but rather the community and our families that bind us together.

So please don’t take this in the wrong way, but there is always a feeling of regret when the Fourth of July passes. I’m the type of person who celebrates that the glass is half full, not half empty. But when it comes to the Fourth of July, I just feel that the summer is half over, that we’re in the downward slide to winter.

Now, I’m not yet pulling out the winter clothes and the boots, but I do know that in the next few months the white stuff will cover our roads and the cold will pinch our cheeks. It’s the sound of fireworks which reminds me of that and helps to reinforce the dread.

Yet, there is still half of July and all of August remaining, so seize the opportunity to create a few summer memories which will keep you warm throughout the long winter months.

Jesus often made his way to the Sea of Galilee. It’s almost resort like. I believe that he enjoyed those days with family and friends.  It helped to reinforce the purposefulness of his mission and celebrate his friendships.

I’m going to enjoy the rest of the summer as much as I can with family and friends -- celebrating our relationships. We will recognize his Love for us as we LOVE ONE ANOTHER.

See you at Mass!
